- Graveyard Matters: Eighteenth and Nineteenth Century gravestones in Yorkshire and Gloucestershire
This project will combine two very different approaches to the study of late eighteenth century funeral practices: a) the physical survey of a number of parish cemeteries from Yorkshire and Gloucestershire, analysing inscriptions, iconography, and location in the churchyard; b) juxtaposing these findings with an in-depth study of four sexton diaries from the holdings at Gloucestershire and West Yorkshire Archives, as well as at North Yorkshire record office, building on the research by Rugg (2013), with the intention of surveying the parish graveyards of Saint John the Baptist church, Cirencester, Saint Mary’s church, Barnsley, and Saint Mary’s church, Thirsk.
