- Turkey in Transition: Heritage, Identity and the Role of Archaeology in Social Politics
This study will examine archaeological research into the Medieval period carried out by different nationalities over the past century in Anatolia and interpretations of Turkish national identity and heritage. The project will involve museum visits in Berlin, London and Washington DC, as well as the examination of how archaeology is used within Turkish social politics, to consider the reception of Medieval Christian and Islamic society within the modern secular state. This project will contribute to the theme of social renewal by developing understanding of the ways a period of major transition in the past is presented within the context of contemporary Turkey and through museums in the USA, Britain and Germany.
