The development of these new imaging techniques will fill the current gap between light microscopy and electron microscopy, and thus will enable the imaging of structures previously unresolvable using light microscopy but yet impossible to observe due to the limitations of electron microscopy. (i.e. Specimens must be fixed and subject to vacuum etc.) With the successful development of this new technique, images of hitherto unknown or unfamiliar structures would aid in the understanding of biological processes and thus bring previously unseen details to current knowledge. The ability to monitor in vivo processes and possibly large protein complexes would allow new experiments to be designed and executed.
