Molecules composed of metals and oxygen atoms provide the means to fine-tune catalysts and materials for optimum performance. This project will focus on one type· of molecular metal oxide or polyoxometalate (POM) for which a general preparative route has been discovered in this School, involving controlled addition of electrons to PMo12O40]3–, which triggers the binding of capping groups to the surface of the electron-rich POM. Two aspects of this chemistry were explored in this project (1) addition of vanadium, iron, antimony and tellurium to the POM surface and (2) variation of the number of electrons in the capped POMs.
