This project considers perceptions towards La Malinche, a 16th century indigenous woman who acted as translator for the conquistadors. I will examine portrayals of her in the murals in public buildings in Mexico City and Tlaxcala, and through other forms of art work in the National Art Gallery. My aim is to discover if La Malinche is loved, hated or both. Is she seen as a traitor who through conspiring with the Spaniards played a key role in the destruction of the indigenous population? Or is she revered as a hero and mother of the mestizo (mixed race) Mexican people?
