- Gastroduodenal reflux: the role of trypsin in lung deterioration after lung transplant
Gastric reflux of the digestive enzyme pepsin has been confirmed as a factor causing the deterioration of transplanted lungs. More recently, pancreatic trypsin has also been implicated in post-transplant lung damage. Since the trypsin must travel from the duodenum to the lungs, it has to pass through the stomach and its harsh acidic environment. Does trypsin survive transit through the stomach and have any significant effect on lung tissue? We developed a new assay for the improved detection of trypsin in the sputum of lung transplant patients. We also tested for trypsin activity after passing through stomach conditions.
