- Calcium signalling mechanisms as drivers of neuronal differentiation
One key goal in modern neurobiology is to understand the molecular mechanisms controlling neuronal cell development, as the ability to promote development will have enormous implications for treatment of neurological disorders and age-related neurodegenerative diseases. Recent work carried out in the host laboratory has shown that neuronal development is accompanied by crucial alterations in two key cellular signalling pathways, both of which involve a change in the concentration of calcium ions (Ca2+) in the neuronal cell. The aim of the project is to determine the roles played by these changes in Ca2+ levels in controlling the developmental response.
