The endometrium consists of spiral arteries which are made up of endothelial cells (ECs) and is a site where angiogenesis occurs on a regular basis. In the endometrium of women with recurrent miscarriage many of the spiral arterioles have increased layers of surrounding vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMCs) compared to normal women. It has been proposed that angiogenic factors are regulating this process. Therefore the aim of this project was focused on the angiogenic factor TGF-βI and its receptors TGF-βRI and TGF-βRII in EC:VSMC association. My research provided evidence for a role of TGF-βI in EC:VSMC association and this can lead to further studies involving TGF-βI in recurrent miscarriage.
