Ectodermal dysplasia encompasses a group of diseases affecting skin, hair, nail, tooth, eye and nerve development in varying degrees and severity. A family of horses is exhibiting signs consistent with an ectodermal dysplasia, which affects females. This project will investigate whether their condition is caused by a similar mutation to those affecting humans. Work will involve sequencing the horse version of genes involved in the human disease process to identify any mutations. This is the first research project investigating this condition in the horse model organism and may provide a new avenue for research into this potentially devastating disease.
