  • Is the prevalence of neural tube defects decreasing: a 25 year register based study

Neural tube defects are one of the most common groups of congenital anomalies.  They are a result of the incomplete closure of the embryonic neural tube in the first three weeks of pregnancy.  This leads to a range of lethal or life-threatening conditions, the most well-known being spina bifida. My project evaluates the number of cases collected through the Northern Congenital Abnormality Survey (NorCAS) from 1985 to 2009. This will include maternal age-specific prevalence, distribution according to socioeconomic deprivation and pregnancy outcome.
