The purpose of this project is to investigate some of the surviving artistic remnants of Bede’s Northumbria, using evidence from manuscripts, sculpture and decorated archaeological artefacts; the aim is to research the connections between Anglo-Saxon Northumbria and the Late-Antique world. This builds on the historiography of global trade and artistic networks during the ‘Dark Ages’. Recent advances in forensic archaeology have opened up research into new and exciting areas that challenge our understanding of early medieval culture. The project is interdisciplinary, combining history, archaeology and science to examine the ‘global’ history of Anglo- Saxon Northumbria.
