• Jane Loraine’s MS Recipe Book (1685): A critical and contextual study and partial electronic edition

This project aims to initiate research on, and make available to a wider audience, a fascinating manuscript recipe book compiled by a Northumberland woman, Jane Loraine, c. 1685. The objective is to create, introduce, and publish electronically an annotated edition of a portion of the MS, and thereby to investigate how the cookbook genre created a unique literary space for women.  As well as close scrutiny of the text itself, research into this manuscript will enquire into relevant critical debates and the context of cookery books in the seventeenth century, looking at the role of medical as well as culinary recipes.
