Expanded Interiors Symposium

Contemporary Fine Art and Archaeology
From Herculaneum and Pompeii to Hadrian's Wall

Thursday 28th March, 2019, Fine Art Lecture Theatre, Newcastle University

As part of the AHRC-funded Expanded Interiors Project and its work at Pompeii and Herculaneum, we will be organising a Symposium to which staff, students and members of the public are warmly invited. The Symposium will include contributions from an expert panel with extensive experience of archaeology, heritage and art in the North East, alongside the Director of Parco Archeologico di Ercolano (Herculaneum), Dott. Francesco Sirano (visiting NCL for the first time).The Symposium will reach beyond a discussion of the project, and indeed of the sites involved to explore more generally questions of the relationship between fine art practice and archaeology, and the opportunities and challenges involved in presenting contemporary fine art practice at heritage sites.

The Symposium will take place in the Fine Art Lecture Theatre, with refreshments outside from 5.15pm. The Symposium outlines is as follows:

17:30, Introduction by Chair Prof Ian Haynes to Prof Catrin Huber

17:30 – 17:50, Catrin Huber presentation on Expanded Interiors at Herculaneum and Pompeii

17:50 – 18:10, Introduction by Chair Prof Ian Haynes to Dott. Francesco Sirano, Key Speaker presentation on activities at Parco Archeologico di Ercolano

18:15 – 19:00, Panel Discussion with invited experts and Question & Answers
