Lyon Mission

Ana Matić, University of Zagreb visiting Sophie Kern, Laboratoire Dynamique de Langage at the University of Lyon

February 18-22, 2019

My name is Ana and I am from Zagreb, Croatia. I have a Master's in SLP and I am currently approaching the final phase of my Doctoral Studies in Linguistics. Working as a Research Assistant at the Department of Speech and Language Pathology, I have been involved in this COST Action from the start. I think many wonderful things have happened to me since the beginning of 2014; both research-wise and on a deep personal level. STSM visits have contributed to that substantially.

The cute little letter M within the acronym STSM stands for a powerful word - mission. Indeed, these short and intense visits can be considered missions; on the one hand they broaden young researchers' prospectives and on the other they allow them to contribute to the broader scope of the Action they are involved in. Therefore, I was delighted to be given another opportunity to participate in one of the missions within this COST Action.

In April 2019, the Action reached its end successfully, thanks to the passionate and devoted work of many people throughout Europe and beyond. It was a pleasure being part of such a big and positive group.

The aim of the STSM I took part in last February, two months before the closing COST Action conference, was to work on one of the final dissemination activities, i.e. on designing and updating the interactive map and making the initial goals and final outcomes of the Action publicly available across the Countries, thus increasing data sharing and visibility. The map was also viewed as a means through which all the questions and problems regarding DLD identification, assessment and service provision which arose during the Action, could be presented and shared with practitioners and stakeholders worldwide in the future.

The large database was generated by the entire COST Action team, but the interactive maps (yes, in the end there was more than one!) have been built-in mostly by the amazing French team at the Laboratoire Dynamique du Langage. The maps provide general information about the Action and allow for more specific search about service provision to the Children with DLD across Europe.

My little Lyon Mission, as i like to see it, was to work with the Lab on the updates, but also to film short and informative tutorials on how to use the interactive maps efficiently. It lasted a week and it was an absolute blast! I am very happy that we had the opportunity to present the maps and the videos to the lovely academic audience and members of the COST Action at the Final Conference in Sofia, Bulgaria.

The Lyon STSM (and the whole action) contributed to the achievement of my own aims as a young researcher in the sense that I learned more about practices of service delivery across Europe, as well as about inadequacies and insufficiencies within the systems. I have met acknowledges and interesting persons (such as lovely Sophie Kern) whose work is closely connected to my own area of interest and I am looking forward to possible future collaborations.

I would like to seize the opportunity to acknowledge James Law (MC Chair) and other WG leads for their clear guidance throughout the Action and to thank Sophie Kern and other members of the Lyon Lab for welcoming me beautifully. We had fun and laughed a lot, but of course, we worked and discussed a lot. And I promise, the only thing we did the Lab cellar was film the tutorials, even though French cellars are ideal for wine-tastings, as well. Next time, next time - avec plaisir :)

Best to all and au revoir!
