In October 2017 Inge Klatte went to Manchester, UK, for her Short Term Scientific Mission. Her mission was to draft a research protocol, together with other researcher, for interviewing parents of children with Developmental Language Disorders (DLD) about their views on and experiences with speech and language therapy.
The initial research questions for this study were drafted in January 2017 at the COST Action Training school ‘mixed methods research in health care’ in Aalborg, Denmark. Many researchers who attended this training school shared their interest in this study. Dr Rena Lyons, from the National University of Ireland in Galway, took the lead and organised a meeting for drafting a research protocol with dr Julie Marshall from the Metropolitan Manchester Universtiy, UK. Dr Julie Marshall is expertised and experienced in interviewing parents within the field of speech and language therapy. Via a STSM of the COST action, Inge got the opportunity to attend the meeting. Next to Julie and Inge, Rena invited dr Karin Davies (Manchester University), dr Sam Harding (Bristol Speech and Language Therapy Research Unit) en dr Cristina McKean (Newcastle University). The important topics during the meeting were ethical considerations, funding and Public Patient Involvement (PPI). Julie’s colleagues presented their experiences with PPI. They involved a patient with Augmented Alternative Communication (AAC) and a parent of a child with AAC into their research team. They expressed that the PPI was of added value, but challenging. Each decision needed to be explained carefully and precisely. As a consequence, the researchers were more conscious about their decisions.
The week started with one straight forward research idea about parental ideas. The week ended with a large scale project, that can be divided in smaller projects. Further work is necessary before a study protocol can be shared with the COST action countries.
In the evenings there was some time for relaxing and socializing, which was very doable in Manchester. At Wednesday evening the group went to a play in the Royal Exchange. Rena and Inge finished their week in Manchester with a tour through the Old Trafford Stadion (Manchester United’s football stadion)
Inge returned from her STSM inspired and overwhelmed and her head full of English abbreviations. She hopes that this week is a nice start of a great international cooperation on this research project.
