COST IS1406 presented to the Croatian SLPs

‌The Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences of the University of Zagreb is the leading Croatian scientific and higher education institution in the fields of rehabilitation sciences, social pedagogy, and speech and language pathology. In May the Faculty organised the 9th International Conference of the Faculty of Education and Rehabilitation Sciences that brought together scientists and clinicians from these three fields with strong tendency towards an interdisciplinary research.

This Conference was an excellent opportunity for the Croatian members and early researchers of the COST IS1406 Enhancing children's oral language skills across Europe and beyond to engage participants in a discussion regarding some key topics from the area of the child language development and impairment. Jelena Kuvac Kraljevic and Katarina Pavicic Dokoza were the co-organisers of the round table entitled 'Standardization of the terminology in SLP'.

Within this round table the CATALIST Consortium was introduced, as well as its recently proposed term developmental language disorders (DLD). This term corresponds to the Croatian term razvojni jezični poremećaj (RJP). The advantages and disadvantages of the ICD-10 and DSM-V in the speech and language assessment procedure were discussed.

Finally, the entire project COST IS1406 Enhancing children's oral language skills across Europe and beyond was presented to Croatian SLPs, especially the goals that we as members aim to achieve, and the activities we conducted so far in order to achieve them. Special emphasis was put on the 'Practitioner Survey'. We explained the importance of the Survey and tried to encourage Croatian SLPs to fill it in once it is released.

This year we are celebrating 55 years of the Faculty, 55 years of speech-language pathology education in Croatia and 20 years of Croatian Logopedic Association, the organisation that gathers more than 450 SLPs.
