WP1 Workshop: Landscape and destruction: theoretical perspectives.

  • Venue: Newcastle University
  • Date: Thurs, 7 July 2022 – Fri 8 July 2022

This workshop brought together the project team’s researchers from Germany and the UK to compare, contrast and exchange different intellectual and cultural standpoints and approaches to landscape-led historical and sociological research.

WP1 researchers presented critical reviews of published literature across the humanities and social sciences. The broader project team responded with short point-of-view papers from their own perspectives, leading to discussion and debate about how the theoretical perspectives would inform the key case-studies and comparisons to be undertaken in the subsequent Work Packages. A walking tour of Newcastle enabled us to consider nineteenth- and twentieth-century devastations of the city on site.

On Friday 8 July the team also took the opportunity to explore different types of devastation in the field through visits to a range of locations across Northumberland.
