DEPTH AI Lab

The DEPTH AI Lab (Digitally Enabled ProacTive Health) is a multidisciplinary research group at Newcastle University’s Translational and Clinical Research Institute. Our work lies at the intersection of disruptive innovation, digital health, software engineering and public health. We develop and clinically evaluate artificial intelligence–enabled systems that improve healthcare delivery, enhance patient self-management, and promote preventive care.

Our research addresses major health challenges across three core domains:

  • Mental Health: Designing and evaluating digital tools to augment psychological support, improve access, and enable adaptive care pathways.

  • Neurological Disorders: Developing self-management technologies that support patients living with long-term neurological conditions, with a focus on usability, engagement, and clinical integration.

  • Health Behaviours: Co-designing and deploying AI-driven interventions to promote healthy behaviours, prevent disease, and improve population-level outcomes.

DEPTH AI systems combine biophysical sensor data, adaptive conversational AI, machine learning and predictive analytics to enable early detection, personalised interventions, and scalable solutions. All research is grounded in ethical design and real-world validation, ensuring translational impact across chronic disease management, cognitive resilience, and broader clinical medicine.
