Dunston Staithes, Gateshead. These staithes were used to transfer coal from local coalfields onto ships. Annual shipment peaked at five and a half million tonnes. They were first built in 1893 and remained in use until the 1970s. The staithes were damaged by fires in November 2003 and July 2010.
