The ocean liner RMS Mauretania, leaving the Tyne for sea trials. The ship was built in Wallsend by Swan Hunter (Swan Hunter & Wigham Richardson, at the time) and launched in 1906. For twenty two years the vessel held the Blue Riband, the record for the fastest transatlantic crossing. The picture is from a collection of quarter plate glass negatives of photographs taken by James William Coleby, of Willington Quay. (TWAS Ref: DX1250/2)
