Newcastle General Hospital opened in 1870 as the infirmary for the Newcastle Union Workhouse. For many years the General was the city's main hospital. It closed in 2010, and subsequently reopened as the Campus for Ageing & Vitality, home to Newcastle University's Institute for Ageing & Health.
