Florrie and Bessie Howden baking bread in a communal brick bread oven which was situated at the end of Mickley Square, Mickley Colliery, Northumberland (1920s). The loaves were usually baked in the pan rather than as cottage or flat loaves. The lady wielding the shovel wears a man's cap - a very common habit in pit villages.
