'Geordies for Life'. One possible origin of the term 'Geordie' is that, unlike others in the North East, the people of Newcastle supported King George during the 18th century Jacobite Risings. Another explanation is that it derives from the nickname for the safety-lamp used by North-East miners, which was invented by George Stephenson.
