you know they will play football on the grass verge you see now they've started to put these trees in and I keep looking for a mind it's coming on now but it is flat you can see it's bent over |

and I want these big windows put in but my husband said well is it worth it you know |

my eh youngest son he was eh five in the October that was nineteen fifty |

he was five in the November we shifted in October and he had to wait till January before he started the new school because Fell Dyke school had hadn't opened you know |

and he had to wait then and eh course my son one was five and the other one was eh |

and now my oldest son's twenty four and the other one'll be twenty one this year so that's eh |

oh yes they're still at home uh-huh |

yes but the older son's getting married a month's time |

well my first job was in the paper mills at Pemberton's you know I was fourteen |

oh yes uh-huh yes oh it's eh it's one of the oldest eh factories in Gateshead that mm-hm |

it's at the corner of the high level bridge down the you can see all the bridges from where I used to work you could see the |

because we were working in front of these old these big windows and uh-huh mm-hm the paper bag place (unclear) course they make paper there |

oh yes they start from making paper and you know |

well it's like pulp you know it's eh (pause) well it's all paper you know there's no waste |

if there's eh any eh mistakes in paper bags it's all pushed back |

yes it's all put in this big pulp and it's made into reels and they make carrier bags and paper ba oh it's interesting |

yes I used to work in a cardboard box factory and we used to do something similar |

oh yes well there's still a place you know eh Kelly's that used to be a cardboard eh in fact it still there |

at Pembertons and then eh when I was nineteen |

you see and of course that's where I met my husband |

that's right and we've lived here ever since |

Using the Interview Interface
- On the left-hand side of the page are the audio player panel [1] and the interview transcript panel [2]. To scroll through the text, use the scroll bar on the right-hand side of the transcript panel.
- The speaker panels on the right [3] provide background details for the interview participants. The colour of the panel corresponds to the colour of that speaker's utterances in the transcript.
- The audio and transcript text are linked in 20 second segments. Click anywhere in the transcript to start playback from that 20 second segment (the audio may take a few moments to buffer).
- Alternatively, you can click the play button (>) in the audio panel to start the interview from the beginning and then click on the audio time-line to jump to that part of the recording and transcription.
- You can also fast forward (>>) and rewind (<<) the audio. It will jump 20 seconds with each click of the buttons.
- Select a theme from the panel on the right-hand side of the page [4] to highlight related key words in the transcript. The transcript will jump to the first relevant key word in the text. Scroll down through the transcript to see further highlighted words.
- Note 1: To preserve anonymity, personal names have been removed. They are replaced by "(NAME)" in the text, and silence in the audio. For the same reason, some references to places have also been removed, replaced by "(PLACE)" in the text.
- Note 2: Obscenities are blanked out in the text, and the 20 second segment of audio that contains them will not play. If the audio stops for this reason, click the fast forward button (>>) to resume playback with the next 20 second segment of audio.
