General editorial tags

As in editing a printed work, it may be necessary when encoding a text in electronic form to include editorial comments on the text. DECTE uses the following TEI XML elements for this purpose:

• <gap> indicates a point in a transcription where material has been omitted, whether for editorial reasons described in the TEI header, as part of sampling practice, or because material is illegible or inaudible.
• <unclear> marks a word, phrase, or passage that cannot be transcribed with certainty because it is illegible or inaudible.
• <note> contains an editorial note or annotation.
