His research focuses on uses of the past in European political discourse, with particular attention on right-wing populism. His current works looks at the use of the 1215 sealing of Magna Carta and the 1683 breaking of the Siege of Vienna in political discourse and in official heritage site representations.

David recently published the chapter '1215 in 280 Characters: Talking about Magna Carta on Twitter' in the Routledge Focus book European Heritage, Dialogue and Digital Practicesedited by Areti Galani, Rhiannon Mason and Gabi Arrigoni.
