The Far Right and the Ethics of Researching the Past

The Far Right and the Ethics of Researching the Past

Online Webinar

Tuesday 27 July, 1600 - 1830

Groups on the far and extreme right frequently make use of the past in their political discourse. Their suggested vision of the present and future is often built upon ideas of a mythical, gloried past for their own target audience. This use of the past by the far and extreme right raises significant challenges for those who research the past.

The same pasts that we research may be used by far-right groups, challenging us to consider the impact of our research. The very act of revealing narratives that counter a far right view of the past may bring us unwanted attention from far and extreme right groups, raising ethical implications on researcher safety.

This event will explore the ethics of researching the past at a time of increased attention on these pasts by a range of far and extreme right groups. The seminar brings together researchers from heritage studies, archaeology, museum studies, and the political sciences.

Our speakers will reflect on ethical challenges that have emerged from their work, with these experiences used as a springboard for open discussion with attendees.

This event is co-hosted by EthEx (Ethics of Researching the Far and Extreme Right) and the Newcastle University  Centre for Heritage Research.
