Objectives
- Enable scholars to see the potential for impact in their own research, no matter its content.
- Identifying non-academic audiences for research.
- Develop skills on translating academic work into more policy oriented work
- Builds the capacity of legal scholars to make connections with policymakers.
- Enhances the ability of legal researchers to engage directly with policymakers in the public/private and third sectors
- Develop the skills of legal researchers to create and sustain impact on policy in both the long term but also as a form of rapid reaction.
- Develop collaborative funding opportunities
CTRL will investigate and disseminate best practice in engagement with policymakers for the specific audience of legal researchers, and build up a network of both legal researchers and policymakers to connect with each other for the purposes of bolstering and expanding on the ‘translational research’ that legal academia already engages in.
While initially aimed at legal scholars, CTRL will also be of use to scholars across the social sciences and arts and humanities who rely on similar skills sets and engage with similar end users.
CTRL will
- Disseminate its work
- publish ‘best practice’ materials ,
- and, where appropriate, academic articles on best practice
- Run training events and workshops
- Organise networking events where policy-makers and legal academics in broad areas can connect with each other to build synergies and make mutual needs and abilities known.
It will organise:
- Workshops – focusing on, for example, submitting evidence to parliamentary inquiries, or drafting briefings for a generalist audience
- Networking events – where sectoral policy-making actors will meet academics active in a specific field so that collaborative opportunities can be explored. These fields include AI & Data Law (nationally and at the European Level); legal aspects of international trade involving the UK and the EU; the consequences of Brexit; and other areas where academics at Newcastle have been active in terms of engagement and policy influence.
- Dissemination of engagement and impact work facilitated by CTRL, both in and beyond Newcastle
