The Chair of Spatial Planning in Europe is one of 17 departments of the School of Planning at the University of Dortmund (founded in 1968). The Chair has been established in 1993 as a Jean-Monnet Chair to strengthen the European dimension in planning education and research at the school. It offers courses in European spatial planning for graduate students, initiates and supervises student research projects related to Europe, and guides diploma dissertations on European themes.

Klaus R. Kunzmann holds the Chair of Spatial Planning in Europe. He is supported in his research by a number of research students, working on outside contracts. The research activities of the chairholder and the research team are focused on comparative studies of regional restructuring in old industrial areas, local economic development and spatial planning in Europe. ERP has always tried to competitively bid for funding from various institutions and public bodies. Successful bids were funded, amongst others, by the European Commission, the Federal Ministry of Construction, Housing, and Spatial Planning, various Laender Ministries (education, housing, economics). Over the past years, partly as a consequence of the former function of K.R. Kunzmann as Director of the Institute of Spatial Planning, University of Dortmund, extensive research networks have been developed and successfully employed.
