CURDS was established in 1977 and has grown into a major international multidisciplinary research institute. The Centre consists of around twenty research staff and thirteen full time doctoral students, drawing upon a wide range of disciplines including Geography, Planning, Economics, Sociology, Political Science, Mathematics, Computing and Management Science. The Centre's mission is to undertake research aimed at improving understanding of the process of area development in advanced economies. It also undertakes strategic research concerned with the design and evaluation of public policies relating to territorial management. The Centre carries out a wide ranging programme of academically rigorous and policy relevant research for a variety of academic, government and private clients and receives funding from a number of sources. These include the Higher Education Funding Council for England, the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and through contracts with UK government departments, the European Commission and private industry.

Important international links include the OECD, the European Commission and the European Science Foundation. Links are also maintained via an active programme of research dissemination including workshops, seminars, conferences and publications.
