Gender
Among other social and cultural identities, gender played a great role in defining how people in antiquity acted and were represented in the literary or in the visual sources. Great differences existed in the role of women in society between the Greek and the Roman world or according to the social status of the individual and understanding how gender played an important role in defining people’s identity and status may reveal new aspects of ancient society that have been long overlooked.

Cultural identity
How was cultural identity expressed in the diverse and multiform contexts of the Greek and the Roman world? And how far can the understanding of ancient cultural identity help our understanding of cultural identity in the global contemporary world?

Religious identity
How far can the understanding of the role of religion in the Classical world influence our perception of religion in contemporary society? Religious identity is one amongst many ways in which cultural identity is expressed. When looking at the Graeco-Roman world, in its chronological and geographical extension, great differences emerge in the way people practiced religion from place to place, from time to time and according to people’s social and cultural background. And indeed, the Graeco-Roman period offers an excellent example for an understanding of the way people managed religious identity in a diverse Mediterranean world, linked by strong commercial, political and cultural connections.
