The Cessation of Volunteering project explores one aspect of older people's volunteering - the point when they find they have to leave a volunteering role.

This is can be prompted by an age-related issue such as illness, increased caring responsibilities or loss of mobility.

Moving out of a volunteering role can be a difficult experience but it can also be challenging for the staff who support volunteers.

The project explores the experiences of both volunteers and volunteer managers. 

In the first stage, it focuses on volunteering in cultural heritage organisations but, in the second stage, it will look at this issue across all volunteer-involving sectors in the UK.
