Biomedical Signal Processing Laboratory

Communications, Sensors, Signal and Information Processing Group
School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Newcastle University

Thank you very much for your interest in our group's work. We are always interested in hearing from people who wish to join, either as a PhD or MSc student or as a postdoc.

There are several ways you could join. Please follow the guidelines carefully as they will save you a lot of time.

Postdoctoral applications

Currently, there are two vacancies in the lab.

1. A Part Time Research Manager (at 50%)

2. A Postdoctoral Research Associate

If you would like to discuss the possibility of joining us as a externally-funded research fellow, or if you have an exciting project to do in collaboration with us, please do drop Kia Nazarpour a line.

PhD applications

Currently, there are no funded vacancies in the lab.

We receive many inquiries from prospective students. The information provided in in this page should answer some common questions. If you are interested in joining us in Newcastle as a PhD student, here are the main things you should know:

PhD Programme at EEE: The School has a few very competitive fully-funded studentships available each year (to students of any nationality). The BSPL welcomes students with pre-secured funding or with other scholarship.

Requirements: Applicants must have

  • strong mathematical, programming in C and MATLAB and problem solving skills;
  • a keen interest in developing signal processing and machine learning techniques for medical applications;
  • a relevant first class degree, e.g. electrical and electronic engineering, biomedical engineering, computer science, mathematics or physics.

How to apply: General information about applying for a PhD post at EEE can be found here. We prefer you contact us as early as possible, before making a formal application so that we can evaluate your application.

Visiting the BSP Laboratory: If you are already a PhD researcher and you would like to spend a 3-6 month stay in Newcastle with us, we would be pleased to hear from you.

MSc and BSc applications

Final year projects are available for motivated researchers from Newcastle, who are looking to broaden their synthetic skills in biomedical engineering.We believe that a good final year project should allow an able and enthusiastic student to get results reasonably quickly and then progress to more complex and challenging aspects of the topic based on this solid platform. Many of these projects stem from research ideas that have been shown to work but haven't yet been explored in greater detail.

Summer studentships

Every year our laboratory hosts a couple of summer interns.

Newcastle University Students: If you are an undergraduate student at Newcastle University, your stay in our laboratory can be funded by a scholarship from Newcastle University. For details, please see this link.

Other Students (including those applying from overseas): It is unlikely that the laboratory could provide funding for you or support your visa application. Please email Kia Nazarpour for details.
