BBSRC/InnovateUK: Feasibility studies on management and use of biofilms

Innovate UK and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) are to invest up to £2.5m in Feasibility Studies to support the management and use of biofilms.  This funding will enable end users to engage effectively with universities, research organisations and providers of solutions to exploit the potential of biofilms and deliver novel solutions to biofilm challenges. In addition, we want to accelerate the transfer of knowledge of model systems to real world, in vivo and in situ challenges and opportunities. This competition opens on 15 June 2015 and the deadline for applications is at noon on 16 September 2015. There will be a briefing day for potential applicants in London on 18 June 2015.

The aim of this competition is to support:

  • Novel applications of technology and the development of new solutions to specific opportunities and challenges.
  • The development of tools, techniques and technology with broad, generic or cross-sector potential.

One of the outcomes of this competition will be to highlight novel, cross-sector challenges and opportunities for the application of biofilm science, and highlight gaps in our understanding of basic biofilm science. These results will inform the on-going development of planned further investment in a national programme on biofilms currently being developed by BBSRC and Innovate UK.  The need for a national programme in the area was identified at a strategic workshop BBSRC and Innovate UK held in December 2014.  At the workshop representatives from six industry sectors and a small group of academics identified a multitude of pre-competitive and commercial topics for consideration which have been used to inform the scope of this call.

These initial feasibility projects are open to companies of any size working alone or in collaboration with other companies, universities or research organisations but must be business led.  We expect projects to last up to 12 months with total costs up to £100,000 although we may consider projects outside this range.

Consortium building workshops will be held in:
