My research group works to document and conserve the genetic variation within species, and to use genetic data to better understand threats to species. Thus my goal is to bring an evolution and adaptation perspective to the task force, and to help evaluate when inbreeding and loss of genetic diversity are important factors in species' extinctions. Specific interests include understanding the evolutionary impact of habitat fragmentation; rapid adaptation in new environments; hybridization; and migration in response to climate change. I also work on developing guidelines for establishing and maintaining ex situ collections to save species from extinction. I work primarily but not exclusively with plants.
