Professor Isaacs leads the Musculoskeletal Disease research theme. He is Professor of Clinical Rheumatology and an Honorary Consultant Rheumatologist with the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. John is an academic lead in the NIHR Joint and Related Inflammatory Diseases Translational Research Collaboration.

He is internationally renowned as a pioneer of translational rheumatoid arthritis (RA) research. He performs early phase experimental medicine studies, often using products developed in-house. His research interests include immunotherapy of rheumatic, autoimmune disease, clinical therapeutic tolerance, pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis and genetics and pharmacogenetics of rheumatoid arthritis.
