Asian Studies Research Group convenor, Jo Smith Finley (East Asian Studies, School of Modern Languages) will chair a dialogue around Borders, States, and Violence in Modern Asia between Newcastle University authors Joseph Lawson (History, Classics and Archaeology) and Nick Megoran (Geography, Politics and Sociology). Afterwards, there will be a chance to ask questions, join in the debate, andbuy the books at discounted prices (taking advantage of an author signing!), all accompanied by a glass of wine and nibbles.

Joseph Lawson is an historian of 19th and 20th-century China. His research focuses especially on two themes: social histories of conflict in rural China, with a focus on the multi-ethnic Southwest; and histories of the rural economy. This is his first book, which examines violence in Liangshan, southwest Sichuan, a region beyond the control of the state.

Nick Megoran has spent two decades studying the appearance of a new international border in Central Asia. His book traces how bordering gets caught up in nationalist politics, and the disastrous effects on those who live alongside borders. In an age when borders are becoming increasingly politicised, he asks what a global ethic of border controls might look like.
