Interactive Architecture Design

This publication aims to explore the implications of embedding interactive digital layers in the city for architecture and urbanism by introducing fundamental concepts; characterising and illustrating relevant case studies; proposing a dimensional framework; and putting forward some of the strategies in this emergent field. In a way, the publication attempts to provide architects with sufficient knowledge about interactive spaces and technologists with examples of how digital pervasive technologies are being conceived and deployed in public spaces by architects and designers alike.

The contents of this publication are the result of research conducted by Carlos Calderon. The research included reviewing over 200 hundred digital interventions, selecting 70 for closer inspection and analysing 35 of them. The research has also benefited from informal conversations with leading designers and academics as well reviewing key bibliography and revelant journals and conference articles. This investigation was supported by the Engineering and Physical Re- search Council (EPSRC -E046924-) and the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK. Part of this research was conducted as a visiting scholar at Harvard Graduate School of Design.
