The 16th Annual International Conference of the European Utopian Studies Society will take place from 1-4 July 2015 at Newcastle University. The conference theme is ‘The Ends of the City’.
We are delighted to welcome plenary speakers Annette Giesecke (Delaware), Ruth Levitas (Bristol) and Mark Shucksmith (Newcastle). The conference also features an interdisciplinary Zamyatin roundtable to honour the work of the Russian naval architect and dystopian novelist who was for a short time a resident of Newcastle during World War I.
The conference theme of the ends of the city runs though our discussions. Panels will explore questions relating to the city’s boundaries, its purpose, and ideas of its demise. Newcastle-Upon-Tyne in the Northeast of England is uniquely situated to consider the city and its end(s). Its urban limits are fuzzy, its future is uncertain, and there are many questions to be asked about what and who urban regeneration might be for. We vividly illustrate the latter theme in our Thursday night screening of the Amber Collective film A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to Utopia which considers the work and legacy of T Dan Smith.

The conference is being organised on behalf of the Utopian Studies Society by Dr Nathaniel Coleman and Dr Adam Stock.
