Professor Adam Sharr's book Demolishing Whitehall: Leslie Martin, Harold Wilson and the Architecture of White Heat has been commended in the RIBA President's Awards for Research. The book details a plan to demolish and reconstruct London's Whitehall in the 1960s, replacing the historic palaces of state with a ziggurat-section concrete megastructure. The judges commented that it is 'a book on an interesting topic, rigorously researched, that made for a fascinating read. The judges felt that the authors had generally done an excellent job in writing a very readable book'. Tom Brigden, a recent PhD graduate of the school, supervised by Adam Sharr and Andrew Law, was also commended for his work. His thesis traces an intellectual and cultural history of the idea of the protected vista. The judges wrote that this is 'original research drawing on both historical and contemporary sources... well-researched and presented, and exploring important ideas in an area lacking in precedent. The judges thought that this ambitious PhD was deserving of a commendation.'
