Dr Ben Bridgens

Ben is a Lecturer in Structural Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering and Geosciences (CEG) whose research to date has focused on the testing, analysis, modelling and design of woven composite materials and structures and exploitation of technical textiles in novel applications. Replacement of conventional materials with lightweight composites minimizes resource use whilst reducing costs and improving functionality. Current projects include design of medical implants for hernia repair and development of novel materials for consumer electronics. Key to these projects is an understanding of holistic design requirements, working closely with a wide range of disciplines, and a creative approach to materials engineering. Dr Bridgens is a Chartered Civil Engineering and his research is informed by five years working at Arup where he carried out specialist analysis and design of lightweight structures worldwide, and worked on a wide range of public art projects that involved novel use of materials and public engagement.
