March 2019 - Small Scale Underwater Wireless Sensor Network at Loch Earn

The USMART team have just returned from experiments on Loch Earn, Scotland, demonstrating a small scale underwater wireless sensor network. Network nodes consisted of V3 modems integrated with prototype network/sensor processor and a simple sensor payload measuring temperature and pressure. Point-point communication range of up to 3.6km was achieved with the acoustic modems, often in challenging multipath conditions due to shallow water and complex topography. Networks of 6 sensor nodes + gateway node were achieved with reliable data collection via a mixture of single-hop and multi-hop communication, with TDA-MAC protocols proven to successfully avoid collisions.

Larger scale deployment in the North Sea will follow in the coming months.
