Provision of Advanced Training Internationally renowned postgraduate programmes in Structural Engineering and Construction management have been established around the research, teaching and professional interests of the academic staff in the Structural Engineering Group. It is provided in an interactive environment which combines a wide research profile within the requirements and interests of practising Engineers. Typically, half the postgraduates enrolled on our programmes are reading for M.Sc. degrees (or postgraduate Diplomas), while the remainder are undertaking research leading to M.Phil (1 year) or Ph.D. (3 years) degrees. The Structural Engineering Group ensures that all our postgraduate students benefit from the advantages of working in an academic environment with a 50 year history. Our aim is to develop the knowledge and abilities of each student to their full potential. Research Excellence A maximum "5" rating has been awarded to the Department of Civil Engineering at Newcastle University in the last two of the U.K.'s national Research Assessment Exercises (1989 and 1992). The next assessment is due before the end of 1996 when a similar achievement is anticipated. The award of a maximum rating reflects the international excellence of the research programmes offered within the Department. The Department and the University The Department of Civil Engineering has recently celebrated its golden jubilee, representing 50 years of teaching and research. It has consistently maintained its status as one of the foremost Civil Engineering departments in the U.K.. Renowned for its diversity, the Department is organised into five groups comprising Structural Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Water Resources Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering and Transport Engineering. Originally a school of medicine and surgery dating back to 1834, Newcastle University has developed into an internationally recognised academic Institution of excellence. The University occupies a central compact site, with student residences and the city centre within a short walking distance. Sporting and recreational opportunities are excellent. Amongst its assets the University includes a country estate with an 18 hole golf course. Postgraduate Courses and Research Experienced and dedicated academic staff within the Structural Engineering Group research a variety of subjects, many of which form part of the advanced study modules leading to M.Sc. and Diploma postgraduate qualifications. All courses are regularly reviewed so as to offer the highest standards of attainment. M.Sc. and Diploma courses are offered in Structural Engineering and Structural Engineering & Construction Management along with a number of associated research projects.
