CIV 435 STRUCTURAL DYNAMICS

Learning Aims

• To experience the use of a commercially available package in solving finite element problems.
• To develop skills in the application of a finite element software;
• To understand the relationship between computer hardware and software in relation to finite elements;
• To be able to interpret finite element results in terms of real structural  behaviour;
• To acquire experience in mathematical modelling of 2-D and 3-D structures.

Outline Syllabus

Dynamic characteristics of structures;
Eigensolutions to determine resonant frequencies of structures;
Rayleigh's principle;
Direct integration of equation of dynamic equilibrium;
Receptance analysis;
Effects of structural defects on dynamic characteristics of simple structures;
Dynamics as a tool for non-destructive testing;
Practical aspects of vibration measurement & control;
Earthquakes;
Effects of seismic events on structures;
Modified Mercalli scale.
