The Award Committee chaired by the most honourable President of the European Society of Rheology (ESR), Professor Jean-Michel Piau, members: Professor Pino Marrucci, Dr. Hans Martin Laun, Professor Roland Keunings, has decided to bestow the Weissenberg Award 2002 to

Professor Ken Walters FRS

The award will be presented on Monday, 2nd September, 2002, at the 6th European Rheology Congress, Erlangen. The laudation will be given by Professor Marcel Crochet.

The Committee of the ESR has decided that the Weissenberg Award will be bestowed every two years, and will be presented at a major rheology conference in Europe

The committee of the ESR elected a Weissenberg Award Committee at its meeting in Cambridge on 21st August 2000. Submissions of suggestions from Rheology Groups and individual rheologists to the Secretary of the ESR are encouraged. The following guidelines apply:

The Weissenberg Award will be bestowed biannually, delivered at a conference location covered by the ESR. The award will be given for outstanding, longterm achievements. Eligible are rheologists whose center of scientific activities lies in Europe. Nominations shall include:

A brief scientific biography;
A review of the nominee's accomplishments advancing the science of rheology upon which the nomination is based;
A curriculum vitae with publication list;
Supporting letters from other rheologists addressing the nominee's achievments.

The first Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology (ESR) was made in 1998 to

Professor Giuseppe (Pino) Marrucci

of the Universitá degli Studi di Napoli "Federico II".

The award ceremony took place at the 5th European Rheology Conference, Portoroz, Slovenia, 6-11 September, 1998.
