Ambassador's Reception

Geisilaine Soares dos Reis attends Science Without Borders Reception at the Brazilian Embassy

I was invited by the ambassador of Brazil in the UK, Mr. Roberto Jaguaribe, to attend to the embassy of Brazil in London on May 10, 2013, for a meeting about the Brazilian government program Science Without Borders (SWB).

Post-doctoral and doctoral Brazilian students in the UK supported by SWB attended to the meeting. We met the president of one of the major research agencies in Brazil, CNPq, Professor Glaucius Oliva, representatives of the Brazilian embassy and consulate in the UK and the ambassador of Brazil, Mr. Roberto Jaguaribe. At the meeting we had the opportunity to express our achievements in the program. We also presented the most diverse areas of knowledge we are engaged in the United Kingdom and our perspectives on the future of scientific and technological development of Brazil.

Mr. Jaguaribe and Mr. Oliva reinforced the main objectives of the Science Without Borders: to create new opportunities for collaboration between Brazil and the most diverse countries in the world and to improve the quality of Brazilian workforce. To promote the internationalization of science in Brazil the SWB also encourages the attendance of scientists to the country. There are scholarships to young investigators and internationally recognized research leaders to Brazil, such as Special Visiting Researcher, Full Doctorate, PhD Student Visitor (Sandwich) and Post Doctorate scholarships.

Brazil is a country which grows fast. Our economy develops every day, but there are still a small number of PhDs relative to population. Furthermore, we must increase the interaction between academia and industry for developing new products and technologies. Brazil needs to internationalize its science, expand its frontiers of knowledge and increase its visibility as a scientifically and technologically developed country. Education institutions in Brazil need to broaden their international relations in order to make education in the country more globalized. The SWB is challenged to throw the seeds for this revolution in science, technology and education in Brazil.
