This is the web site for the Plant Insect Molecular Interactions Group based within Newcastle University’s School of Biology Psychology.
The linked research groups in the Universities of Newcastle and Durham, headed by Angharad and John Gatehouse, have set out to bring a multidisciplinary approach to the study of plant-insect interactions, although the emphasis is on the molecular rather than the whole organism aspect of biology. Under this area of study, current research interests include plant genetic engineering, insect biochemistry and molecular biology, and plant molecular biology.
The group is recognized as world leaders in the genetic modification of crops for enhanced levels of resistance to pests and the impact of such crops on beneficial insects. It was first to produce insect resistant crops expressing plant-derived transgenes (Nature, 1987, 330: 160-163). It has maintained its lead in the field and is actively using both genomics and proteomics to better understand the molecular and biochemical bases of plant/insect, pest/natural enemy interactions.http://silver-server.dur.ac.uk/shapeimage_1_link_0
