Fees, costs and funding for UK and EU Students

The Arts and Humanities Research Board

The main national funding body for graduate work in our programmes is the Arts and Humanities Research Board (AHRB). It offers UK/EU students one-year awards for MA or MLitt courses (Competition A) and three-year awards for PhD students (Competition B). These cover full-time fees and maintenance for UK students. EU nationals may be eligible for AHRB awards on a fees only basis (or a full grant basis if currently working in the UK). Competition for AHRB awards is severe. Successful candidates normally have outstanding first degrees. If you are applying for a three-year award you are also expected to have completed (or to be in the course of completing) an excellent MA or MLitt, as well as presenting an original and well thought-out research proposal. We can help with this, since applications for AHRB awards are submitted through the School. If you wish to enter for these competitions, you must apply early. This is our timetable:

Oct-Jan

Contact our Postgraduate Office to discuss your application. A potential supervisor will be appointed.

February

Obtain an AHRB application form from our Postgraduate Office or the AHRB website (http://www.ahrb.ac.uk). Prepare a draft application with help from your supervisor. Alert your referees by sending them a draft proposal and a request for a reference (getting references in time is usually one of the most difficult parts of the process).

24 March

Your draft application goes to the University Registrar's Office. A Faculty Scrutiny Panel meets to review all draft AHRB applications.

1 April

You may well be asked to redraft your AHRB application in accordance with the Scrutiny Panel's comments. You should also now chase up your references.

20 April

Your redrafted AHRB application form should be submitted to the University Registrar's Office.

August

As a result of internal scrutiny of AHRB applications, you may well be eligible for internal Universtiy funding if your AHRB application is unsuccessful. You will normally be contacted by the Faculty and/or the School informing you of the sum of money provisionally allocated to you, or whether you are on a reserve list. The AHRB publishes its list of successful applicants in mid-late August, If you have been successful, you will no longer be eligible for internal funding. If unsuccessful, you will receive internal studentship money. This may be more than was originally offered, depending on the rate of AHRB success in the Faculty.

 University Awards

Postgraduate Studentships In Humanities And Social Sciences are awarded to candidates who narrowly miss AHRB or ORS awards (you are only eligible if you have also applied to the AHRB or ORS scheme). The studentships usually pay your fees, and make a modest contribution to maintenance.

We also have our own School of Modern Languages Postgraduate Studentship which pays the fee component of a full-time degree by research. Again, you are only eligible if you have also applied for AHRB funding.

Other sources of funding

We may be able to offer other income to our postgraduate students, for help with undergraduate teaching and other activities. Research students (usually only from their second year onwards) help with tutorials and language laboratory work, to gain experience of teaching.
