The current Programme Directors are Simon Baker in Middlesbrough (senior), and David Mayne at the Queen Elizabeth in Gateshead (early years).
The Programme Director organises the rotation of Specialist Trainees throughout the Northern School of Anaesthesia, and is also responsible for appointments to the grade.

The Programme Director works to ensure that STs in our training scheme are attached to hospitals in a sequence, which is able to deliver the relevant units of training to all the trainees within the schools. I am helped in this task by Dr Phil Barrow (Royal Victoria Infirmary) and Dr Mike Tremlett (James Cook University Hospital), by Barbara Sladdin (Administrator to the Northern Schools of Anaesthesia) and (most importantly) by you, the trainees. You are in the best position to know where you need to go to next, and therefore I will make every effort to make sure that reasonable requests from you are met. You should specifically discuss this at your annual appraisal; the outcome document has a specific section for letting me know what is decided. Unfortunately, I am constrained by the necessity to provide hospitals with fixed numbers of trainees with specific skill mixes, so not all requests can be met. There is usually an acceptable solution however.

Currently the process by which the finalised rotation document is produced is as follows:
Shortly after each rotation date you will receive a letter/e mail asking for your requests for your next placement. If you don’t receive one, please phone or e mail Barbara Sladdin.
The draft is checked for accuracy (ensure no-one is left out, etc)
The list of trainees at each unit is checked to ensure that there is an appropriate number of trainees of the right grade mix. If there isn’t then training will suffer as rotas will be unmanageable.
Solutions to problems found at steps 3 and 4 are looked for. This often involves time, negotiation, and flexibility on the part of individual trainees. Any trainee who has demonstrated their ability to be flexible in this way will be given a high priority in choosing their placements on the next rotation.
The rota is published.
I intend to publish the rota at least two months before the rotation date. This means that people are able to plan things in advance. Unfortunately, things change all the time and the further in advance a rota is done, the more changes will be necessary after it is published. Changes after publication will be made on the website version . Affected units and individuals will also be notified.

statement is to clarify the NSA’s current position to secure the training of
those needing OOP, that of those remaining in the rotation and the delivery of
the service.
OOP training will normally now
only be supported to enable a trainee to gain competencies not deliverable
within the local programme.
Approval will be limited absolutely to those who have passed the FRCA or its equivalent and whose progress through their competencies is good.
Application will be made to the Lead TPD (Currently Dr S Baker) giving sufficient notice for a slot to be filled at the next scheduled recruitment round. In practice this is likely to mean almost 12 months notice.
When a period of OOP training has been agreed the slot in the rotation will be filled if possible and because of this we are unlikely to have a post or a salary to offer should the attachment fail or end early. We will use our best endeavours to avoid hardship but this cannot be guaranteed except as far as we are obliged by law.
Applications will be most likely to be supported on an August to July basis, or dates very close to these.
Approval of more than 12
months in total in the whole programme is highly unlikely unless this is as part
of a training programme in ICM, when for trainees needing complementary
specialities an additional period solely for this purpose will be considered.
The number of OOP
opportunities may be limited and selection may be needed.
This remains a statement of
principles not a binding policy. Each case will be examined
individually by the programme directors who will take advice from others as
needed.

Applications for
Out of Programme Training or Research: Local Guidance
The term OOPT/R applies to any period of time where the trainee wishes to go out of programme for experience locally or abroad. This applies to training in anaesthesia, intensive care or any complementary specialty such as general medicine.
Clear
guidance has been issued regarding OOPT by the NSA Executive in November 2007.
Trainees who are wishing to take up an OOPT/R position should initially discuss the appropriateness of their request with Dr Simon Baker, the Programme Director for ST5-7 who has responsibility for this area.
Once the OOPT has been agreed to by the PD in conjunction with the NSA Executive there is an application processes which need to be negotiated before final permission is granted. The process has changed with the tightening of regulations as laid down by PMETB.

New retrospective rules from PMETB - OOPE must have PMETB approval, initiated by Programme Director/Deanery, before being taken
If you are intending to leave the rotation temporarily (eg to take up a research post, a medical post or an overseas post) then PLEASE let the program director know as soon as possible.
The Royal College of Anaesthetists will only consider applications for such time to be included in your training prospectively, so you MUST TELL the College as soon as you have any definite plans, before you actually go.
You must also inform the Postgraduate Institute for Medicine & Dentistry as soon as possible, and the department you are working in if it is likely to affect them – i.e. if you will be leaving before the next rotation.
Both the College and the Postgraduate Institute will ask me for a letter of support for your enterprise.
