Northern Schools of Anaesthesia

Current Courses

The Northern Schools run a number of courses for trainees within the region, that are also available to trainees from other regions.

Our Postgraduate Institute has limited funds, but has agreed to support the following "mandatory" courses:

The next Newcastle course will be held in the Simulator in the Training Department, RVI.

Six days in September 

This course is intended for new trainees in anaesthesia, and involves simulation, tutorials, group work and lectures.

FRCA Courses , Newcastle School

We run regional courses for both Primary and Final Fellowship Examinations, costing £500 each, and co-ordinated by  Barbara Sladdin

Primary FRCA course

This is run yearly  from September to March and covers major aspects of the Primary syllabus in 10 all day sessions (alternate Tuesdays). Teaching is by both conventional lectures and more interactive methods, including computer simulations, group work and presentations. We have  introduced elements of problem based teaching, and concentrate mainly on basic sciences.  Sessions also include in course MCQ tests.

Final FRCA course

This is run over a year to cover the Final syllabus, on 10 all day sessions ( alternate Tuesdays), to alternate with the primary course.

These should be organised "in house" by local College Tutors.

Management Course for Post Fellowship Specialist Registrars

This course is intended as an introduction to many post fellowship topics, and is not intended to replace formal management courses such as those run by Keele or the Postgraduate Institute.
